PostFinance Top Scorer is now also being launched in the PostFinance Women’s League

In the upcoming 2023/2024 ice hockey season, the PostFinance Top Scorers will also take to the ice in the highest women’s ice hockey league to secure funds for talented young players. Just like the male scorers in the National League, the best female players from the eight teams in the PostFinance Women’s League will also wear the famous yellow helmet and flame-emblazoned jersey.

The PostFinance Top Scorers in the National League have been on the hunt for points on behalf of talented young ice hockey players for over 20 years. Following PostFinance’s commitment to the PostFinance Women’s League as the main and naming rights partner last December, the flame helmets and jerseys will also be worn in the highest women’s ice hockey league during the upcoming season. The female player with the most scorer points will play as the PostFinance Top Scorer. In the opening match of the season, the captains will wear the Top Scorer helmet and jersey, but these will then be passed to the female player with the most scorer points.

Equal opportunity in the fastest team sport

Sarah Brunner, Head of Brand Management & Sponsoring at PostFinance, is delighted by this milestone in women’s ice hockey: “PostFinance aims to achieve equal opportunity between the genders, and this commitment to the PostFinance Women’s League reinforces our support. That’s why we’ve introduced the Top Scorer concept for the PostFinance Women’s League in largely the same form that has proven so successful in the National League for over 20 years.” The Top Scorer concept has been modified where the particular circumstances of the PostFinance Women’s League had to be taken into account. This will ensure that women’s ice hockey is fully promoted. The vision is to implement the Top Scorer concept in the PostFinance Women’s League in the same way as the National League at a later date – that means payment based on points (see information box). The more girls who are attracted to ice hockey and want to actively play the sport, the better the conditions for making women’s ice hockey professional. Just like for the men, the amount awarded in the PostFinance Women’s League will also be fully used to promote young Swiss ice hockey players.

Stefanie Marty, the 35-year-old captain of “SC Bern Frauen” and former Swiss international player, says: “I’d always hoped that women’s ice hockey in Switzerland would receive more attention and support. Introducing the Top Scorer concept in the PostFinance Women’s League is a major step in the right direction.”

How the Top Scorer concept works in the PostFinance Women’s League

The PostFinance Top Scorer is the player who has achieved the most scorer points at each club. Just like in the National League, this player will wear the PostFinance Top Scorer jersey with the flame design on the back and the PostFinance Top Scorer helmet. While for the men’s league, PostFinance contributes 300 francs per goal and assist by the Top Scorer to the coffers of the relevant club’s junior section, the Top Scorer concept will be different in the PostFinance Women’s League.

Last season in the highest women’s ice hockey league showed that the Top Scorers at the best teams achieved a lot more points than those of teams at the bottom of the table. Distributing the funding based on the statistics would widen rather than narrow this gap. For this reason, a fixed amount of 150,000 francs will be distributed amongst the eight clubs in the PostFinance Women’s League, which means that all Top Scorers will secure the same amount of money for “their own” junior section.
