PostFinance wants to systematically reduce its own carbon footprint and contribute to curbing global warming. The CO2 calculator helps you work out approximately how much CO2 you emit with your personal consumption.

As a bank, we are aware of our responsibility and are therefore committed to climate protection. We have set ambitious reduction targets and, together with Swiss Post Group, are working towards achieving the net-zero target by 2050.

We are embarking on this journey together with our customers because, when it comes to mitigating climate change, every contribution counts. The greatest potential on an individual level lies in changing our consumer behaviour, which is responsible for over 60% of individual CO₂ emissions (The link will open in a new window according to a study by the Swiss Federal Statistical Office). This is why it is so important we know and analyse the carbon footprint of our own personal consumption.

This is precisely where our solution comes in, and we aim to raise customer awareness more and more about the issue and to encourage changes in behaviour. If you use PostFinance’s CO₂ calculator, you can see how large the carbon footprint of your own personal consumption is, and how these emissions impact efforts to reach the Paris Agreement’s climate targets.To do this, the CO₂ calculator analyses your spending behaviour anonymously and provides tips on how to improve it. You also have the option to reduce your CO₂ footprint through offsetting and neutralization.

How the CO2 calculator works

The calculator is based on the expenses paid via your PostFinance Card, credit card, TWINT or transfers. These are supplemented with emission factors and displayed in different categories.

Customers have the option to reassign transactions to other categories. It is also possible to improve the precision of the CO₂ calculation through individual settings (e.g. “I do not own a car”).

Your data will not be shared with third parties, and all bank confidentiality and data protection provisions are complied with.

All PostFinance private customers who have e-finance or the PostFinance App. The CO₂ calculator can be found in the “Analyses” section.

As default options, data for the last 1, 2, 3, 6 or 12 months is available. Users can also select a custom date range within the past 24 months.

PostFinance will not share your data with third parties and complies with all data protection and bank confidentiality provisions.

The amount for each transaction is multiplied by a CO₂ value for each industry.

This value is determined by environmental experts and based on the Swiss average. PostFinance does not have access to the contents of the basket; the calculation is therefore an estimation that may differ from the real value in certain cases. Customers can use the optional settings (e.g “I seldom/never eat meat”) to increase the accuracy of the CO₂ value.

Each expense or transaction is assigned a default category. In some cases, transactions cannot be clearly categorized and may therefore be inaccurate.

One example is the expenses for a bicycle: they could either be placed in the Sport/Leisure category or the Mobility category (if used to commute).

Customers have the option to reassign transactions to another category.

Transactions can be recategorized via the transaction details in e-finance and the app. Depending on the category, this may have a positive or negative impact on the CO₂ value.

This is not possible at this time.

Users of the CO₂ calculator can select accounts to be included in the calculation. If a partner account shared by several account holders is chosen for the calculation, there is the risk of the CO₂ value being counted multiple times.

Refunds for past purchases appear as a negative CO₂ value for the carbon footprint calculation. The time of the refund is applied. However, negative emissions are not included.

Yes, you can deactivate the CO₂ calculator at any time in your e-finance or in the PostFinance App.

In e-finance:

Click on the symbol with your initials at the top right
Select “Profile”
Click on ”Edit” in the “Data protection settings” area
Open the “Data usage” tab
Activate or deactivate the option under “Analysis”

In the PostFinance App:

Tap on “Services”
Select “Profile and settings” and then “Profile”
Click on “Edit” in the “Data protection settings” area
Select “Data usage” and the option “on” or “off” in the “Analysis” area

Note: If you deactivate “Analysis”, all analysis functions will be deactivated. This includes automatic categorization of transactions, the label function, budgeting, an overview of your subscriptions and the CO₂ calculator.

In the Paris Agreement, Switzerland committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50 percent compared to 1990 levels by 2030. This would be a reduction of 250 kg of CO₂ emissions per capita and per month.
