Information for the bereaved

Death can come unexpectedly and sometimes much too early. We would like to lend our support to the bereaved in such cases and inform you about the procedure for assets of deceased account holders.

We will be pleased to help if you have any questions. In order to provide specific support, we need a copy of the death certificate. Please send it to us as quickly as possible by post or e-mail (as a PDF):

What happens with PostFinance accounts?

The procedure that PostFinance uses for the assets of deceased account holders varies depending on the type of account, assets and authorization status. However, the following points are generally applicable:

  • PostFinance may not always be able to provide information. In order to be identified as a legitimate heir or a person entitled to receive information, we require an official document confirming your status as an heir. Please note that PostFinance accepts copies of official documents.
  • The PostFinance Card is personal and cannot be transferred. It is cancelled upon the death of the holder. The same applies for access to e-finance
  • The accounts of a deceased account holder must be closed within 12 months of PostFinance’s receipt of the notification of death. Control of the accounts cannot be assumed by another holder or authorized person.
  • An issued power of attorney for an account is still valid after death but access to the accounts and assets may be restricted in order to protect the interests of the heirs.
